In order to understand the importance and value of text link ads,
you must first understand how they fit into the big picture of internet
rankings and search engine optimization from the perspective of
the search engine.
Google MSN and Yahoo together account for approximately 90% of
all search engine traffic. Google is the "600lb gorilla"
of the search engine market as they account for approximately 70%
of all search engine traffic. Needless to say that you want to be
ranked as high in Google as possible under your target keywords.
In fact, not too long ago, MSN and Yahoo both used Googles engine
to display results from search engine queries (as did AOL, Dogpile
and many others). They have since both developed their own ranking
algorithms, but to some degree, are patterened off of Google and
PageRank.
By now you have probably noticed that the pricing for text link
ads varies with the "PageRank" or "PR" of the
website. The founders of Google defined PageRank to determine a
pages relevance or importance. It is only one part of the algorithm
when it comes to the Google ranking, but the other aspects are ever
changing and PageRank deserves the most attention due to its importance.
PageRank is bascially a “vote”, by all the other pages
on the Web, about how important a page is. A link to a page counts
as a vote of support. If there’s no link there’s no
support. In other words, the more votes you have, the better off
you are percieved by the engines. From a high level, this "vote"
is really the transfer of page rank from the voting site or site
containing the text link ad, to the site to which it is linking.
However, keep in mind there is still strategy involved and votes
carry different weights. Hence the range in pricing for various
links. No two sites are exactly alike so the PR transferred from
one site to the next will also vary.
In summary, PageRank carries a lot of weight in the Google ranking
algorithm. Google is constantly updating this ranking algorithm,
but their number one conern is always the number of text links or
"votes" pointing back to your site. Hence, text link advertising
is essential if you are to get ranked naturally/organically in the
search engines.
